RFID at Newgate Technology

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of an item (typically known as an RFID tag) applied to a product, animal, or person for identification and tracking via radio waves. Tags can be read from several meters away. Most tags contain at least two elements. One is a circuit for storing and processing data, modulating and demodulating a radio-frequency (RF) signal, and other functions. The second is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal.

There are generally three types of RFID tags: active RFID tags, which contain a battery and can transmit signals autonomously, passive RFID tags, which have no battery and require an external source to provoke signal transmission and battery assisted passive (BAP) which require an external source to wake up but have significant higher forward link capability providing greater range. Today, RFID is used in logostics to improve the efficiency of stock tracking and management.

RFID and asset management

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) combined with mobile computing and Web technologies provide a mechanism for organizations to identify and manage their assets. Initially introduced to retail it is now possible to deliver a set of tools that eliminates paperwork, give proof of id and presence. This eliminates manual data entry. Web management tools allow companies to monitor stock and make decisions anywhere in the world. Web applications now mean that third parties, such as manufacturers and contractors have access to update data, including for example, item history and documentation online ensuring that the end user always has accurate, real-time data. Companies are already using tags combined with mobile asset management solutions to record and monitor the location of their assets and their status.

What is EID?

Following the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in 2001 the European Commission made proposals to improve the traceability of sheep and goats. The proposals included individual identification and recording so that individual animal movements could be traced. The proposals also included electronic identification as the European Commission recognised that recording individual numbers particularly in places of high throughput is not practical without electronic means.

EID is not  mandatory for goats because the UK goat population falls below the 160,000 threshold. However, goats  still need to be individually recorded on a holding register.
